Start your private tour at the picturesque Nyhavn canal. The area is filled with colorful buildings, old sailing ships, and lively cafes. Kids can watch the boats passing by while the adults enjoy a coffee and Danish pastry. Next, head to the nearby Amalie Garden, featuring grassy areas and play zones where children can burn off some energy with some family games.
In the afternoon, enjoy a guided tour of The Blue Planet, the largest aquarium in Denmark and one of the most modern in Europe. The aquarium is a unique whirlpool-shaped building with stunning views of the Øresund Strait. Walk through the underwater tunnels surrounded by sharks and colorful reef fish. There are some great exhibits where you can touch starfish and sea cucumbers.
Let us know the kind of restaurants or food you think is perfect for your family, and our local tour planners will make some suggestions of authentic Danish restaurants we think you will like.
Day 2: Copenhagen – Castles, Boats & Gardens
Your 2nd day begins at the fairytale-like Rosenborg Castle. Follow in the footsteps of royalty as you walk through the royal chambers, such as the throne room and tapestries. You’ll then head to the treasury in the basement, where you can see the dazzling Crown Jewels.
After watching the boats on day 1, it’s now your turn to set sail! Enjoy a guided canal tour, gliding beneath the low bridges and colorful houses. You can see some of the city’s most renowned attractions, such as the famous Little Mermaid Statue. While on board, your guide will share fun facts about Copenhagen’s history and distinct neighborhoods.
End the day at Tivoli Gardens, one of the oldest amusement parks in the world. It features a variety of rides, from wooden roller coasters to mini trains for younger kids. It’s filled with beautiful gardens, arcades, playgrounds, and a food hall, keeping the whole family entertained and fed!
Day 3: Roskilde – Viking Adventures
On your 3rd day, your private guide will take you on an exciting day trip from Copenhagen to Roskilde.
The first stop is the Viking Ship Museum, the ultimate Viking experience! See the five original Viking ships that were recovered from Roskilde Fjord. The whole family can dress up in Viking costumes and interact with costumed guides. Try traditional skills such as using Viking tools and shields or carving wooden amulets. Finish your time at the museum with a trip across Roskilde Fjord on a recreated Viking ship. You’ll help row and hoist the sail, an immersive experience that helps you to believe you’re a Viking family from centuries ago!
In the afternoon, explore the Lejre Land of Legends, an open-air museum that features reconstructed Iron Age villages and Viking houses. You can even search for mythical creature sculptures in the forest. Adults and children can try activities like archery and pottery-making and interact with real common animals from that time, such as goats and sheep.
Return to Copenhagen for one more night in the capital city.
Day 4: Odense – Fairy Tales & Playgrounds
On your 4th day, travel to Odense, renowned for the famous Hans Christian Andersen Museum. Feel like you’re stepping into Andersen’s imagination with distinctive lighting effects and interactive animations. The museum features exhibits for children and adults to enjoy as you learn more about the legendary author.
In the afternoon, spend time at the Tinderbox, a children’s cultural center inspired by Andersen’s fairytales. Children can dress in costume, create art and puppets, and even perform on stage.
Finish the day with a relaxing family meal near the riverfront in the historic old town.
Day 5: Odense – Zoo & Village Life
Spend the morning of your 5th day at the Odense Zoo, one of the top-rated zoos in Europe.
Highlights Include:
- Savannah Zone: See giraffes, zebras, and antelope roaming.
- Oceanium: Dive into South American ecosystems with penguins, manatees, and monkeys in rainforest settings.
- Asian Area: Observe red pandas and Siberian tigers and even engage with interactive exhibits about conservation.
- Children’s Area: Petting goats, pony rides (seasonal), and playgrounds aimed at younger kids.
- Daily Feedings and Keeper Talks: Learn more about animal behavior and care during scheduled presentations throughout the day.
In the afternoon, the whole family can step back in time at the Funen Village, an open-air museum featuring a recreated 19th-century village. You can interact with costumed interpreters from that period and relevant farm animals that were integral to 19th-century life.
Day 6: Aarhus – Living History
On day 6, enjoy the scenic 2.5-hour drive to Aarhus, the second-largest city in Denmark. Start with a family lunch in one of the city’s authentic Danish restaurants.
After lunch, explore the Den Gable By Museum, similar to the Funen Village from the previous day. You can explore three distinctive time zones: an 1860s market town, a 1920s urban street, and a 1970s neighborhood. Visit historic bakeries and workshops, all stocked as they would have been during their respective eras. Kids can try old-fashioned toys, help “shopkeepers” weigh goods on antique scales, or mail a postcard from the retro post office. Finish with a horse carriage ride, really feeling like you’ve taken a journey to another era.
Check into your hotel before dinner and take some time to unwind. Your private guide can be on hand to drop you off at a suitable restaurant, although the Latin Quarter is filled with great family restaurants within walking distance.
Day 7: Aarhus – Museums & Nature
For your final day in Aarhus, your private guide will take you for a guided tour of the Moesgaard Museum, a standout attraction in the city. Explore Viking and Iron Age exhibits, drawing you into the lives of former warriors and explorers. The highlight of the museum is the Grauballe Man, Denmark’s best-preserved bog body. The man lived over 2,000 years ago but was remarkably well-preserved until he was discovered in 1952.
Get back in your luxury vehicle for a journey to Den Permanente Beach, where you can spend the afternoon. Your private guide can give you some free time to relax on the beach or swim in the calm, shallow waters. When you are ready to depart, your private guide will escort you back to your Aarhus accommodation, where you can unwind before your final day.
Day 8 – Scenic Return to Copenhagen
Depart Aarhus early on day 8, as you return to Copenhagen. Stop along the way at Mols Bjerge National Park, one of Denmark’s most picturesque natural areas. Your private guide will lead you on one of the family-friendly hikes, such as the Agri Bavnehøj trail. Along the way, you may see wild horses and grazing sheep, with your guide helping you spot colorful butterflies and sharing stories of the wildlife in the region.
Stop in Ebeltoft, where you can visit the Glass Museum and learn how the dazzling modern glass art is created. Enjoy a quick ice cream along the harbor before finishing your journey to Copenhagen. If you are flying home that evening, your private guide can drop you at the airport and make the return journey as stress-free as possible. If you are staying in Copenhagen overnight, your guide can drop you at your hotel instead.
